Terms of Use

The rules for using Advoca. You accept them in the app before you sign in, and they apply every time you use it. This is the end-user licence agreement for the app.

Last updated: 4 November 2026 Effective: 4 November 2026

1

This agreement

These terms are an agreement between you and Walktall Works (Pty) Ltd, registration number 2018/074329/07, trading as Advoca ("Advoca", "we", "us", "our"). By tapping Accept in the app you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, don't use Advoca; nothing is created or stored until you accept.

2

Who can use Advoca

  • You must be 18 or older. You confirm this before you sign in.
  • You may have one account, and it is for you alone. Don't share it or sign in as someone else.
  • Use your own email address, or a Google or Apple account you control.
  • You can't use Advoca if we have previously removed your account for breaking these terms.

3

Your licence to use the app

We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the Advoca app on phones you own or control, for your own non-commercial use, in line with these terms and the rules of the store you downloaded it from. You may not copy, modify, sell, rent or reverse-engineer the app, except where the law allows it.

4

How Advoca works

Advoca shows you photos and short videos posted by people within 2 km of where you are standing, newest first. Every post leaves the feed 24 hours after it is posted. The feed needs your phone's precise location while the app is open. Because the feed depends on who is nearby, what you see changes as you move and as people post.

5

Zero tolerance: content rules

Advoca has zero tolerance for objectionable content. You must not post, and you agree not to post:

  • Sexual content or nudity of any kind
  • Anything that sexualises, exploits or endangers a child. We report it to the authorities.
  • Violence, threats, self-harm or content that glorifies harm
  • Harassment, bullying or humiliating anyone
  • Hate speech or discrimination against people for who they are
  • Spam, scams, or false or misleading posts
  • Anything illegal, including drugs, weapons or stolen goods
  • Other people's private information, or photos of people where they'd expect privacy
  • Content you don't have the right to share
  • Advertising or selling, which this version of Advoca doesn't allow

6

Zero tolerance: abusive behaviour

  • Don't abuse, threaten, stalk or target anyone, including people you've blocked or who have blocked you.
  • Don't try to work out where someone is from their posts, or follow anyone you've seen on Advoca.
  • Don't fake your location, use automated tools or bots, or interfere with how Advoca works.
  • Don't make false or abusive reports.

Accounts that break sections 5 or 6 are removed. Serious breaches, such as content involving children or credible threats, lead to immediate removal and may be reported to the police.

7

Your content

You own what you post. By posting, you give Advoca a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, process and display your post to people within 2 km for 24 hours, and to keep it afterwards as our Privacy Policy describes for safety and legal reasons. This licence ends when your post is permanently deleted. We won't use your posts in advertising or sell them.

You're responsible for what you post and for having the right to post it, including permission from people who can be identified in it.

8

Reporting and moderation

Posts go live straight away. Anyone can report a post from its menu; the post is hidden from the reporter's feed at once and goes to our moderators.

  • We review reports and act within 24 hours.
  • We remove content that breaks these terms, and remove the accounts of people who posted it.
  • We may act on content we find ourselves, without a report.
  • You can also contact us at info@advoca.social about any post or user.

9

Blocking

You can block any user from the menu on their post. Once blocked, neither of you sees the other's posts anywhere in Advoca, straight away. They aren't told. You can unblock them in Settings, Blocked accounts.

10

Location and your safety

Posts reach people physically near you. Think before you post something that shows where you live, where you'll be or who you're with. Never use Advoca while driving or anywhere it isn't safe to look at your phone. Meeting people you've seen on Advoca is at your own risk. In an emergency, contact local emergency services, not Advoca.

11

Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time in Settings, or by email if you no longer have the app. See Delete your account for what is deleted and what is kept. We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if the law requires it, or if we stop offering Advoca, in which case we'll tell you first where we can.

12

Price

Advoca is free to download and use. This version has no in-app purchases, subscriptions or advertising. If that changes, we'll tell you first and update these terms. Your mobile network may charge for data.

13

Advoca's rights

The Advoca app, name, logo and design belong to Walktall Works (Pty) Ltd. These terms don't give you any right to use them, other than to use the app as described in section 3.

14

Our responsibility

We work to keep Advoca running and safe, but we provide it "as is" and "as available". We don't promise it will always be available or free of errors, or that every post is accurate or appropriate. Posts are made by users, not by Advoca, and don't reflect our views.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss caused by other users' content or conduct, and our total liability to you for any claim related to Advoca is limited to R1,000. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including your rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2008, or liability for our gross negligence or fraud.

15

App Store terms

If you downloaded Advoca from Apple's App Store, these terms also apply:

  • Agreement: this agreement is between you and Advoca only, not Apple. Advoca, not Apple, is solely responsible for the app and its content.
  • Licence: your licence is limited to using the app on Apple-branded products you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions.
  • Support: Advoca is solely responsible for maintenance and support of the app. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support.
  • Warranty: if the app fails to meet any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund any purchase price you paid (Advoca is free). To the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation, and any other claims, losses or costs from a failure to meet a warranty are Advoca's responsibility.
  • Claims: Advoca, not Apple, is responsible for any claims by you or a third party relating to the app, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
  • Intellectual property: if a third party claims the app or your use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, Advoca, not Apple, is solely responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging the claim.
  • Legal compliance: you confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a United States Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any United States Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Third-party terms: you must comply with any third-party agreements that apply when you use the app, such as your mobile data agreement.
  • Third-party beneficiary: Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this agreement, and once you accept it, Apple has the right to enforce it against you as a third-party beneficiary.
  • Contact: questions, complaints or claims about the app go to Advoca, at the details in section 19.

16

Google Play terms

If you downloaded Advoca from Google Play, Google Play's Terms of Service also apply to your download. If they conflict with these terms on the subject of your use of the app, these terms apply.

17

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa. If you have a complaint, please contact us first and we'll try to resolve it within 30 days. If we can't, either of us may take the matter to a competent court in South Africa. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under consumer protection law where you live.

If any part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.

18

Changes

When we change these terms, the app shows you the new version and asks you to accept it before you continue. If you don't accept, you can still contact us, read the terms, log out or delete your account.
